GSA Week 1

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

The first week at the GSA was fun but terrifying. I learned a lot from the first week about the course and how the GSA is ran and about the kinds of people I will be on the course with and how the lecturers operate their lectures. I have found it stressful in terms of the long distanced that I have to travel to get to the GSA.

MON 16th September

We had our big induction from the program leaders and the lecturers that would be taking us for our classes telling us what we would be doing. then we had a talk form the GSASA president telling us about the different programs that are run and supported that have been started and ran by our fellow students. Then we had a safety briefing from Avril going over electrical and fire safety procedure.

TUE 17th September

We were introduced to each-other and the course before getting stick in to what is critical listening. I learned that in the possess in this course will give me the skills to critically analyse the work that I create and looking at the work in a different way. We were also were given a brief introduction to the library.

WED 18th September

We had our first lesson Ronan where we found out what sound was and how listen to it and use it in our day to day lives. I already knew most of it going through the Sound Production course in the previous year however it was good to have a recap of my knowledge whilst the class was all brought to the same level. We all had to pick a song that we found technically brilliant. I chose the song while my Guitar gently weeps by Regina Spektor which I loved how the song mixed western and eastern instruments together to make a new rendition of the classic Beatles.

THURS 19th September

We started the day earlier with the people who are on the course from the Forth Valley College associate student program myself included. Where we gave our opinion on how the program had ran this year and how we felt that it could be improved. we then had our second lecture with Jessica going over what field recording is and how to use it effectively. we then learn about the different modes of listening witch was a new thing that I had learned that I found interesting.

FRI 20th September

On this day we went on a field recording trip around Glasgow. We recorded sound from then Hub to Glasgow University. I will use the sound from this recording as well as others to create a chase for my soundscape. this will be for my first project. from this day I had decided to buy my own field recorded. The one a bought was a Zoom H1N recorder.
